Introducing EHS Cosmetic ServicesEye Health Services is proud to offer a variety of aesthetic services for rejuvenation of the eyes and face. These treatments are provided by John Mandeville, M.D., Ph.D., a specialist in cosmetic and reconstructive eye plastic surgery, a specialty also known as “oculoplastics.” The field of oculoplastics includes the treatment of facial wrinkles, puffy, baggy, and droopy eyelids, as well as bumps, spots, skin tags and small veins around the face. In most cases, these procedures can be performed in the office setting with little or no time off from work. Your Cosmetic Team
Botox Cosmetic® for WrinklesFew rejuvenation treatments provide results as visibly dramatic to patients as Botox Cosmetic® by Allergan. Botox® is used to treat “wrinkles in motion.” These are the lines that form when you smile, frown, or raise your eyebrows. Eventually, these lines can become present at rest, and will no longer respond to Botox®. “Wrinkles at rest” can be addressed with microdermabrasion, laser, or tissue fillers. Botox® is a protein that relaxes the facial muscles that form wrinkles, and is administered by injection directly to the wrinkles. The procedure takes only minutes, and you can return to your normal activities. Temporary bruising, redness, or lid droop are the most common side effects. Benefits are usually evident within a week, and last about 3-6 months. Ophthalmologists were the first medical specialists to use the Botox protein about 35 years ago, and it has an excellent safety profile. Ask for a consultation with Dr. Mandeville to discuss the risks and benefits of this popular treatment. MicrodermabrasionAlso known as a “lunchtime peel” because of its short recovery time, microdermabrasion is a skin treatment that combines vacuum and micro-fine crystals to remove the very outer layer of the skin. The procedure exfoliates dry, dull skin, while stimulating circulation and collagen production. Treatments are customized to the needs and comfort level of each patient, and can be combined with other rejuvenation services, such as Botox®. Microdermabrasion is a progressive treatment, meaning that the strength is gradually increased each session, so that the maximal benefit will be achieved after 4-8 sessions. This service is currently offered in our Quincy office in a relaxed and professional setting. Eye Health Services offers the Derma Genesis microdermabrasion unit, which is a top of the line, medical-grade device. Services are individually tailored to your skin. Who is a candidate for microdermabrasion?Microdermabrasion is safe for almost all skin types. It can be used to treat superficial lines and wrinkles on the face, and it can help to even out age spots and uneven pigmentation. Clogged and enlarged pores respond well to microdermabrasion, which can even be used to treat acne and certain types of scars. What can I expect during treatment?Treatments are performed in the office and last about half-an-hour. Makeup is removed, and protection is placed over the eyes. Normally, a tingling sensation is felt from the microcrystals, but this is generally minimal if any discomfort. The face may be flushed for a short while, but makeup can be reapplied immediately after treatment. You can return straight to work or your normal activities. When will I see results? You can expect some results, including some smoothing of the skin and reduction in clogged pores, immediately. However, microdermabrasion is For a consultation, contact our elective services counselor, Kristine Chadwick, at (617) 472-5242 x114, or stop by our Quincy office. Financing OptionsIn general, insurance companies will not reimburse for cosmetic procedures. In rare cases (such as when the eyelid tissue hangs down so far that it blocks the vision, or when a skin lesion causes symptoms such as itching or bleeding), the procedure might be covered. Your doctor may perform special tests to determine medical necessity, but your insurance company has the final say. For your convenience, we offer our patients a number of financing plans, including a monthly payment option. And for special occasions, including birthdays and holidays, we are pleased to offer cosmetic gift certificates. Cosmetic Laser Surgery for Wrinkles
Laser Hair RemovalMen and women… Are you bothered by unwanted hair? Tired of shaving, waxing, unpleasant chemicals? We now offer permanent laser hair reduction for all kinds of hair and skin colors anywhere on the body: upper lip, face, underarm, leg, bikini area, chest, and back. Laser treatments last only minutes, and require no anesthesia. Treatment areas should be shaved or trimmed (not waxed or depilated) one day before surgery. Excellent results are achieved with 4-5 treatments, spaced 6 or 8 weeks apart. Regular treatment intervals are required for optimal results, as hair follicles must be treated in specific phases of growth. Spider Vein TreatmentsSpider veins, also known as “telangiectasias,” represent dilated blood vessels close to the surface of the skin. Spider veins and broken capillaries often occur on the face, legs, or arms. The Profile vascular laser can coagulate these small vessels, making them instantly disappear or fade. The vessels then slowly reabsorb over time. No pre-treatment is necessary, but you should avoid exercise and hot baths afterwards. If legs are treated, compression stockings and leg elevation improve long-term results. Mild irritation or bruising may occur. Laser Skin Peels and ResurfacingDepending on your age, skin-type, history of sun exposure, and other factors, the wrinkles on your face are unique. During your laser consultation with Dr. Mandeville, you will develop a specific treatment plan to address your needs. Your treatment plan will take into account the location and severity of your wrinkles, your lifestyle and recovery needs, and your skin sensitivity. Some patients may benefit from Microdermabrasion rather than laser. Who is a candidate for laser wrinkle treatments?Laser skin peels are safe for all skin types, anywhere on the body. It can be used for fine wrinkles, acne scars, and blotchy skin. Laser resurfacing is a more aggressive treatment for deeper wrinkles and pigmented spots. It can be used with all skin types, but is limited to the face. What can I expect during treatment?Treatments are performed in our Quincy office and generally last about half-an-hour. Makeup is removed, and topical anesthetic gel is placed on the area to be treated for 30 minutes. For deeper laser resurfacing, local anesthetic injections may be used. Eye protection is always used. The laser treatment feels like a rubber band snapping against the skin, but should not be painful. A thick moisturizer is applied after the treatment. You will need to adhere to a strict regimen of post-operative care, including skin protection and oral antibiotics. When will I see results?Laser skin peels have a recovery time of 3-4 days, and redness begins to fade after the 3rd day. Patients usually receive 2-4 treatments spaced 6-8 weeks apart. You will notice an immediate change in skin texture and tightness. Laser skin resurfacing is a more aggressive treatment, and recovery typically takes 5-10 days, depending on the depth of the treatment. The skin will immediately be noticeably smoother and more even. Redness begins to fade after 1-2 weeks, but may last for a few months. Redness can be covered with concealers. Generally, only one treatment is needed. Non-ablative Laser Skin RejuvenationFor patients who can't afford any downtime, we offer non-ablative laser facial rejuvenation. Laser rejuvenation can be used for wrinkles, redness, or scars on the face, neck, and hands. This non-invasive laser acts underneath the surface of the skin, where it helps to stimulate the production of new collagen and fill out wrinkles from below over the next 4-6 months. There is no removal or “ablation” of skin, so there is essentially no recovery except for slight redness. Laser skin rejuvenation is an ideal lunchtime procedure for people on the go. © 2000, Eye Health Services, Inc. |
