Laser Vision Correction combines the accuracy of the Excimer laser with proven vision correction procedures to reshape the cornea, allowing light rays to focus more precisely on the retina. A thin flap of corneal tissue is created and folded back with an instrument known as a microkeratome. The laser is then applied to the next layer of corneal tissue, reshaping the corneal contour to eliminate refractive errors. The corneal flap is returned to its original position where it bonds without the need for stitches.

LASIK Step by Step Procedure

1. After the eye has been numbed with anesthetic eye drops, a lid holder gently keeps the eyelids open.
2. Patients remain awake and comfortable throughout the procedure.
3. A small suction ring is placed around the cornea and serves as a platform for the microkeratome. A thin flap is then made in the cornea.
4. Patients are asked to look at a target light while the Excimer laser reshapes the corneal tissue. The patient will hear a clicking sound during treatment.
5. The procedure lasts from 10-45 seconds depending on how much correction is needed.
6. The corneal flap is placed back in its original position and allowed to adhere for several minutes. No stitches/sutures are required.
7. The cornea is rechecked 15-20 minutes later. The patient is sent home with drops and a shield. A follow-up appointment is scheduled for the following day.
8. For their own safety, patients are not allowed to drive home after the procedure, so it is important to arrange for transportation.
9. Vision is often dramatically improved and most patients return to work or to full activity the day after surgery.

Am I a candidate for LASIK?

The ideal candidates for Laser Vision Correction/LASIK are between ages 21 and 65. LASIK candidates must have a stable refraction (no change in glasses for one year). People with certain medical conditions, and pregnant or nursing women may not be good candidates.
